Beauty is in the eye of the beholder at classy clinic chain

“Turns the typical austere and bright healthcare facility on its head. Spaces for solitude and relaxation help set the overall ambience of the design. The result is a space that feels more like a wellness retreat than a medical facility,” Azlan Nazam, Judge.

Project: Zhenmeihui Clinic

Award: Health and Wellbeing – Hospitals and Clinics, Gold, 2022

Location: Shanghai & Zhengzhou, China

Design practice: Woods Bagot

Client: Oubang Medical

The designer’s mission for the Oubang Medical clinics was to embody the company’s beauty philosophy, while offering a relaxed and discrete guest journey. Woods Bagot created calming and zen interiors for the chain clinic’s three locations (two in Shanghai, one in Zhengzhou), all of which offer an anti-aging service, hair salon and women's health service. Each offered unique challenges based on their locations. For instance the Shanghai Changning Zhenmeihui Cinic is located on a corner block of a busy intersection and adjacent to one of the city’s elevated roads. Here it was key to create a sense of calm once transitioning from the busy city street to a quiet private clinic.
While the Zhengzhou Zhenmeihui Clinic is situated within a 19th century neoclassical building where multiple other health and wellness tenants are also located and where space planning was key. In all the clinics, a neutral colour palette and natural materials including eco-friendly rattan and sisal were chosen for their sustainable qualities and warmth and texture.

Design highlights

The Shanghai Hongqiao Zhenmeihui Clinic features a three-floor central atrium with a retractable roof and an extensive private garden. A marble front desk sits in front of a hollowed-out brick wall at the back, connecting the inside and outside. The first floor has a lounge, meeting room, hair bar and restaurant as well as a central spiral staircase which leads up to the treatment area on the second floor.
