Top global projects triumph in WAN Awards

SOM’s 252 East 57 th Street tower in Manhattan and Henning Larsen’s Nordea Bank Headquarters in Denmark are among the leading projects that have won top prizes in the World Architecture News Awards 2018. In this year’s prestigious award ceremony, SOM’s tower won the Tall Buildings Award while the Nordea Bank Headquarters took the Commercial Buildings Award.

Both were among an international line-up of projects and architects taking awards across 30 categories in the WAN Awards 2018. The awards recognise current and future projects, as well as the application of new technologies and architecture’s rising stars.

The names of the 2018 winners were revealed at a celebration dinner at the London Hilton Bankside this week, which was attended by architects and industry leaders from around the world.

  • Best Use of Immersive Tech Award: Future Street by Place Design Group. Highly commended: Mental Healthcare Facility, Royal Columbian Hospital, by Stantec
  • Adaptive Reuse Award: Uber Advanced Technologies Group R&D Center, by Marcy Wong Donn Logan Architects. Regional winner EMEA: The Department Store, by Squire and Partners. Highly commended: Gouda Cheese Warehouse by Mei architects and planners
  • Affordable Housing Award: Habitat for Orphan Girls, by ZAV Architects. Highly commended: Ilot 19 La Defense, by Farshid Moussavi Architecture; Primary Stingy Blocks of Flats, by Helin & Co Architects
  • Modern Methods of Construction Project Award: Dalston Works by Waugh Thistleton Architects; Plug-In City 75 by Stephane Malka Architecture
  • Colour in Architecture Award: Khyaung School, by Weston Williamson + Partners. Regional winner Americas: Vegetal Kingdom, Senosiain Arquitectos
  • Concrete in Architecture Award: Foro Boca Concert Hall, by Rojkind Arquitectos. Highly commended: Shui Cultural Center, by West-line Studio
