Restaurant wins global gong for mobility

An airport restaurant has scooped a major international prize after beating more than 16,000 diners from across the world.

by Jez Abbott 09 January 2019

The restaurant, called Attimi by Heinz Beck, at Romes’s Fiumicino airport overcame competition in the "La Liste" World's Best Restaurant Selection, after emerging from analysis of more than 16,000 restaurants in 165 countries. It was named “best restaurant in mobility” earlier in early December.

The restaurant was created by a partnership between Beck & Maltese Consulting and Chef Express of the Cremonini Group to a design by architect Massimo Iosa Ghini. Attimi by Heinz Beck is in the boarding area of the capital city’s intercontinental flight zone: 3,000 square meters dedicated to food and wine.

The concept comes from analysis of the eating habits of travellers: three different 'time menus' have been created for 30, 45 or 60 minutes, depending on how long the customer can stay while waiting for departure.

Italian architect, designer and professor Massimo Iosa Ghini explained the architectural and interior concept: “Raw and warm metals give the general mood while sophisticated materials have low environmental impact. Vicenza stone was used for tables while Murano glass lamps mix with technical lighting inserted into structural elements. A fast and fluid sign blends with the environment of this new airport boarding area dedicated to luxury.”

La Liste is considered the most authoritative international selection of haute cuisine restaurants, and the award was presented in Paris at a ceremony held at the Quai d'Orsay, home of the French Foreign Ministry. Based on the compilation of hundreds of guides and millions of reviews online, the La Liste review was overseen by an international team of food experts gathered by founder Philippe Faure.

Cristian Biasoni, chief executive of Chef Express, which manages catering for the Cremonini Group, said: “This restaurant created with Beck & Maltese Consulting is proof that even travellers can enjoy a unique experience at mealtimes.”

Chef Express has 200 points of sale, with a presence in 46 railway stations, 50 motorway service areas, and 11 airports. The company operates with its own brands such as Chef Express, Mokà, Mr. Panino, JuiceBar and Bagel Factory, as well as with licensed brands, such as McDonald's.
