Amazing glazing extends new home

LBMV Architects has transformed a dark bedroom flat into an airy, glazed and lavish home.

The design team was tasked with turning the 161sqm four-bedroom flat into a spacious three-bedroom home with generous living space for every aspect of family life.

Built in 1886 and subdivided into flats in 1935, the Lyndhurst Gardens project received status as a Grade II-listed building in 1998. The building is in a conservation area.

The project involved a complete redesign of the original ground-floor flat and adding a contemporary glass extension to increase the living area and maximise views to the garden.

By introducing a rear extension to the property, a large open-plan kitchen is created and sliding glass doors allow the option of alfresco entertaining in the summer.

Large panels of glass and a striking black frame give the extension a contrast to the traditional Victorian brickwork and establishes a statement focal feature that can be enjoyed from the garden.

The design also ensures the interaction with the listed building is minimal, with clear boundaries between old and new to ensure mutual stylistic respect for old and new spaces.

The full refurbishment of the interior introduced luxury materials and a contemporary aesthetic to continue the balance between tradition and modern innovation.
