George Clarke’s Old House, New Home broadcast on Channel 4 is a series in which celebrity architect Clarke transforms old properties into new homes by blending nostalgia with modernity.
One of the shows features an Arts & Crafts mansion in Moseley, Birmingham. The Arts & Crafts style was a romantic but functional Edwardian movement now finding a new audience.
The property had been carved into nine separate flats but the owners wanted to return the space to its former grandeur as a two-storey Arts & Crafts home, but with a modern twist.
The complex plan included an L-shaped extension involving knocking through pre-existing partition walls to create a spacious kitchen and living space.
Out went dated 1970’s design choices and carpeted walls. In went carefully contrasting colour, texture and high-quality materials.
The finished house is a tour de force of exquisite craftsmanship, with one of the biggest highlights being the kitchen/living space.
Flooded with natural light, the cooking space embodies the sensibilities of Arts & Crafts – form, function and pared-down aesthetics.
Polished concrete floors, floor-to-ceiling cabinets and low-level units exude the simple, laid-back themes that struck a uncluttered chord with Arts & Crafts sensibilities.
The highlight is a striking metallic-style kitchen island. For worktops, Neolith stone brand was specified, consistent with the overall vision to specify the best materials.
“The surface brings the whole space together, complementing the quasi-industrial fixtures and fittings used throughout,” said Clarke.
