One of the world’s largest technology companies, Microsoft engaged Tom Mark Henry to help them realise their first Flagship Technology Centre in Australia. The 1680sqm space completed 19/10/2018 is located above the iconic GPO in Sydney’s bustling Martin Place.
The multi-use space was to incorporate an experience centre for conferencing, a multi-purpose room, an innovation factory for developing new products and an Exploratorium to showcase these new products to a wide audience including people from different areas of the business, clients and the public alike. The space was also to have a ‘touch down’ staff area where interstate and global team members could work, for short or long periods. The space was to host a myriad of different demographics from children to CEO’s.
An artful balance was required to ensure that each area was fit for a broad range of purposes. The fundamental aim was to develop a variety of distinct learning environments that were all connected and infused by a holistic experience of the Microsoft brand.
Informal classroom setups, flexible lecture spaces, a small technologically advanced auditorium and a formal Cyber Security room focusing on educating large corporations on their technological safety; are all housed within the space.
Each area was to evoke a unique mood for different styles of learning and discovery whilst feeling intertwined and unified in the one narrative. To create this connection within all spaces, a focus on iterated design elements was embraced to celebrate the Australian landscape whilst highlighting the multi-layered and innovative brand.
Lead designer Jade Nottage worked together with Loretta Lovecek, Kelly Doyle, Laura Ng, Pia Watson, as well as Schiavello Construction, Pluim Joinery, Maneto Architectural Joinery and Optima Joinery. LAM Consulting Engineers handled the lighting design, in addition to Mechanical, Electrical/Hydraulic Engineering and TTM Group worked as the acoustician.
Cassie Byrnes was the artist for this project, and Cillian McManus were sourced for Artisan workers of timber, metal, glass and textiles.
