2019 WIN Awards Entry: Bistecca - Tom Mark Henry

Bistecca - Tom Mark Henry is an entry in the Bars, Restaurants, Clubs and Cafes category at the 2019 World Interiors News Awards.

Bistecca is an intimate venue, which takes its cues from Italian dining focusing on one cut of meat and the best Italian wine. Bistecca was completed 2 July 2018 with an offering including a separate bar, restaurant and wine room within the 138.9sqm space.

The layout of Bistecca is transitory, designed to be experiential. The three separate spaces were conceived to map out the experience from beginning to end, which culminates in reflection on the full journey through the space. Although each space serves a different purpose, all three are central to the concept for the restaurant as a whole and all tie back into the narrative.

The material palette was developed to enhance the atmosphere without detracting from the main event. Dark timber panelling, antique mirrors reflecting the theatre of the bar and archways providing discreet views of other rooms all add to the experience. Whilst black and white chequered floor tiles, Italian marble bar tops and bentwood furniture are seen alongside timber banquettes paired with striped linen fabrics, classic pairings thoroughly researched to remind diners of time spent in Italy.

With reference to the ‘lived-in’ feeling typical of Italian restaurants, although the environment is stripped back and raw, it is also discreetly layered. All of the art and accessories were sourced second-hand. Additionally, the doors into the kitchen, bathrooms and adjoining spaces are repurposed adding to the sense that the space is not brand new.
