Thoughtfully considered from inside to out, materiality and structure are an instant telling that Clovelly House is not your regular beach house. Completed on 15/03/2018 the 350sqm site sees unique landscaping and raised zinc cladding demand presence from the street. Inside, an honest and pared-back palette flows throughout the 375sqm home providing a timeless and subtly layered interior.

Having lived in the area for most of their lives it was important for the client’s home to capture the joy of living by the beach. The area is surrounded with classic beach-style bungalows and this is what the site contained prior to Clovelly House being built. With this in mind, it was important for this particular house to remain sympathetic to is surroundings yet push the constraints of what we are expected to see in the area.

The use of operable louvered screens provide an adaptable internal and external experience to the building’s surrounding coastline of Clovelly Beach.

The harmonious relationship between the indoor and outdoor spaces is established as soon as the front door is opened, if not before this moment. The landscaped courtyards are treated with as much care as the interior. The material diversity of marble, timber and concrete are major elements uniting the different spaces, highlighting a focus on durable and timeless materials. Whilst the raised zinc cladding externally demands to be seen, internally, a more humble palette is employed. Clovelly House holistically represents a merging of the old and new style of beach home.
