2019 WAN Awards Entry: The You Art Centre, Changde - Cultural Architecture

The You Art Centre, Changde - Cultural Architecture is an entry in the Civic category at the 2019 World Architecture News Awards.

by Jessica Evans 23 April 2019 2019

Inspired by the shimmering of the Yuan River, the You Art Centre is located in the origin city of the famous Chinese fable Land of Peach Blossoms, and helps to 'rebrand' the old city identity for greater understanding through this new 'art portal'.

The architectural concept uses "The Light of Changde" as the main theme for the design and creates a stage for the cultivation of art and spiritual lifestyle. Contemporary art is unique and diverse in its way of expressions. In order to tailor for that, the building became 'a series of stacking boxes of various size, height and proportions. Indigenous roof tile craftsmanship and faceting aluminum cladding modules were used to create an animated effect from various angles and daylight conditions.

The project's vision is to use urban art as medium and catalyst for city upgrade and redevelopment, promote aesthetic education for better public spaces, urban art and life style.

Atelier Global envisioned an art space with flexibility and public engagement as the future of the art center is more than just a stage for art pieces, but is also about promoting interaction between the public and the artists. With that in mind, a vertical public atrium was designed as an informal space for exhibition and events, reflecting the traditional social characters of the streetscape to encourage the public to engage and participate with the art.

The You Art Centre also reflects the aspiration of an Utopia where people lead an ideal existence in harmony with nature.

Through the diverse architectural space, the Centre is a spiritual place full of cultural life that can cope with the needs of different art forms - and is "full of sunshine" due to the three-dimesional courtyard and wall-less display, whilst the façade forms an extension of the memory of the place with shadow and light.

Atelier Global is an aspiring studio strongly believes in the power of design and creativity. Their systematic yet transboundary approach has been successfully executed on comprehensive project types including culture, education, retail and live/ work spaces. To find out more, please click here.
