2019 WAN Awards Entry: Shenzhen Book City - Cultural Architecture

Shenzhen Book City - Cultural Architecture is an entry in the Future Projects (Civic) category at the 2019 World Architecture News Awards.

by Jessica Evans 23 April 2019 2019 Future Projects

Located at the heart of the Longhua district, Book City is set to become a significant part of Shenzhen urban history.

Aiming to imbue the district with new life and vitality, the architecture of Book City was designed to be an interlocking system of cultural spaces with vertical terraces to further enhance the living quality. Visitors are offered the chance to experience the sense of nature even inside the building.

Book City is a dynamic and responsive architecture. It creates identity and provides a brand new interactive environment for their experience by the public.

In different perimeters of the building, the large, green terraces forms dialogues with the openings on the façade. The exterior is made up of vertical shading devices that filter sunlight at different angles to give the appearance of flipping a book.

Through the flexible cultural spaces intercrossing vertically and connecting to the surrounding context, the building has become the new cultural anchor within the Longhua district. The spatial arrangement allows the book program to interact with the flexible cultural space without any restrictions of time and space. At each corner of the building, different cultural activities and functions can be found, bringing spiritual fulfillment to the people.

We propose to convert 20% of the designated area into flexible cultural space. Such space is ready to cater new typology of book-related events and exhibitions in the future.

The architecture of Book City was designed by Atelier Global - an aspiring studio whose method is to establish links amongst different cultures and to create spaces that enables transposition thinking. They strongly believe in the power of design and creativity, as made evident through Book City. To find out more, please click here.
