2019 WIN Awards Entry: Movable Bookhouse - Chang Yi Sheng

Movable Bookhouse - Chang Yi Shengg is an entry in the one-off homes, large and small category at the 2019 World Interiors News Awards.

by Jessica Evans 14 May 2019 2019

Designed for children and long-term residency, Chang Yi Sheng utilized the spatial layout and colours to create a comfortable space for children and adults alike.

To use the indoor spaces more effectively, the previous and inappropriate layout was modified. A cloakroom was created close to the front door for convenience when leaving or entering the house, and to reduce corridors, a storage room was made at the end of the passway, so storage needs would not be compromised by the bookshelves. A blackboard has also been placed in the passway to separate the space into different colours. Around the corner, fun spaces were made to increase interactions with the kitchen. The kitchen itself is opened up for a circular route to connect with the dining room with cabinets for appliances extending to the kitchen.

Some compartments were removed to expand the living room, as the room besides it blocks the natural lighting on the higher level of the building. By not placing the sofa against walls or lower cabinets, more empty spaces and movable furniture are available for activities.

With many books in the household, the client wanted to create a bookstore atmosphere, which were referred to in order to create the two wooden bookshelves. The symmetry within the bookshelves offers a sense of stability amongst open and organic public spaces, whilst the creativity and mobility around the books is supported by order and flexibility.
