Intriguing stories behind Chinese and Russian 2019 WAN Award entries

Shenzhen Book City is an entry in the Future Projects (Civic) category.  Located at the heart of the Longhua district, Book City is set to become a significant part of Shenzhen urban history. The architecture of Book City was designed to be an interlocking system of cultural spaces with vertical terraces and the exterior is made up of vertical shading devices that filter sunlight at different angles to give the appearance of flipping a book.

Swirling Cloud: Bulletin Pavilion for BJFU Garden Festival, an entry in the Small Spaces (Temporary) and Urban Landscape categories, has been inspired by an ancient Chinese poem, A gale has risen and is sweeping the clouds across the sky.  The design team has presented a 'pavilion of swirling clouds' for the garden festival of BJFU. Covering an area of 120 square meters, the pavilion is made from bamboo and will serve as a hub for information during the festival, and turn into a place for recreation and gathering after the event.

Novospassky Business Complex is an entry in the Future Projects - Urban Design category and has been inspired  by world well-known examples of Industrial Renovation: The Gasometers of Vienna, Prada foundation (Milan), Hafen City (Hamburg). The history of the area goes back into the eighteenth century with a canvas factory established in the time of Peter the Great.

A sweeping, phoenix inspired fountain is one of the elements involved in One City Development Gemdale Wuhan which is an entry in the Urban Landscape category. The design is structured with a series of diverse spaces, nodes and experiences connected and unified by a fluid gesture and movement. Designers drew inspiration from traditional local mythology including a sweeping layered fountain and water play, in the centre which provides a calming retreat for workers during the day and a vibrant interactive fountain for families and visitors on weekends and evenings.
