2019 WAN Awards Entry: Tsing Yi Southwest Leisure Building - Architectural Services Department

Tsing Yi Southwest Leisure Building - Architectural Services Department is an entry in the Leisure category at the 2019 World Architecture News Awards.

by Jessica Evans 17 May 2019 2019

Sitting at mid-level of Tsing Yi against the hillside, the Tsing Yi Southwest Leisure Building provides a place for enjoyment of sports activities for local residents. Its design introduces a young and vibrant image to recreation centres in Hong Kong.

A sense of motion is expressed by dynamically articulated elements throughout the building. These include the front façade of folding cement panels, interior walls and ceilings with dynamic profiles, feature furniture, as well as the undulating baffle ceiling at the swimming pool, which resembles the posture of a swimmer performing the butterfly stroke.

The premise consists of a multi-purpose arena, an indoor swimming pool, two dancing rooms, a children’s playroom, and an outdoor climbing wall. The climbing wall is located on the façade near the hillside with significant view to the Tsing Yi city center.

In addition to accommodating various sports facilities, the building was also designed as a place to gather. There are spacious lobbies with abundant natural light and seating. Three-tiered external lawns are also provided for leisure and outdoor activities.

The design also stresses connectivity with neighbours. Instead of a rectangular box, the building form reaches out to the community. A welcoming entrance plaza is provided to collect pedestrians from the street into the main lobby. A link bridge with eye-catching folding roofs is also provided at the upper level to lead residents from the residential developments at the opposite side of the street and to the central spine of the building, from where various sports facilities are connected.

The World Architecture News Awards showcase the best international design in both current and future projects. Entries for the 2019 Awards are now open - for further information and to submit your entry please click here.
