2019 WAN Awards Entry: Chetian Visitor and Exhibition Center - West-line Studio

Chetian Visitor and Exhibition Center - West-line Studio is an entry in the Civic category at the 2019 World Architecture News Awards.

22 May 2019 2019

Located in Guizhou province, South-West China, Chetian Village is an important tourist attraction in the region and aims to protect and promote local minorities’ traditions and its unique stone houses - built with local materials from the village’s pit.

The village is located in the core of the karst landform area and has more than 400 years of history, characterised by the fusion and cohabitation between Miao (the local ethnic minority group) and Han (the largest ethnic group in China).

The site is surrounded by mountains and rivers, arranged in a parallel order. The village’s structure is also arranged in parallel bands. Architects integrated this characteristic feature in the design of the visitor center: three parallel units are arranged following an ‘L’ shape.

The tourist center is open to both local villagers and tourists. Its main function is to illustrate the history and humanistic tradition, including functions like: visitors’ reception, gallery, areas for ceremonies, counseling, multimedia exhibition and offices.

The project sums up West-line’s research and their approach to the design. The tourist center is composed of symbolic elements, stone houses, enclosed courtyards and open areas, which combine the traditional construction methods of both Miao and Han. The cultural and architectural mingling between the two communities and the whole village’s history are reflected in the visitor and exhibition center’s architecture.

The World Architecture News Awards showcase the best international design in both current and future projects. Entries for the 2019 Awards are now open - for further information and to submit your entry please click here.
