2019 WIN Awards: Sound of marble - PiM.studio Architects for Silvestri Marmi

Sound of marble - PiM.studio Architects for Silvestri Marmi is an entry in the Surfaces category at the 2019 World Interiors News Awards.

Italian marbles are appreciated in the world for their beautiful textures and elegance. This project aims to bring out the invisible history of each slab from quarry to processing and to embed it permanently on the surface of the marble itself.

PiM.studio Architects use narrative as a design tool to shape a material experience. They recorded the sound wave produced by the stone-cutting machine and, through a computer-generated script, used the sound wave as a creative agent transforming an initial uniform grid into a beautiful organic pattern.

The result is a soft, tactile surface in which the experience and history of the marble is embedded forever in its texture, inviting you to touch it for a sensorial adventure.

Each 3d pattern is manufactured with a 7-axis CNC machine on roughly 3m x 2m slabs and refined with a hand process, combining highly advanced technology with the traditional Italian marble industry craftsmanship.

The design is available on large modular tiles measuring 240cm by 160cm with matching edges for creating continuous surfaces, and it can be used for wall cladding as well as a standalone feature piece or for creating large unique furniture elements such as reception desks or similar. It can also be entirely customised both in dimensions and in the pattern design: the design generative strategy can be applied to the pattern by using a different sound wave to generate a highly personalised design unique to a specific project.

The World Interiors News Awards showcase the best international design in both current and future projects. Entries for the 2019 Awards are now open - for further information and to submit your entry please click here.
