2019 WAN Awards: Barrack Place - Architectus

Barrack Place - Architectus is an entry in the Commercial category at the 2019 World Architecture News Awards.

Barrack Place is an 18-storey A-Grade commercial building located in the Central Sydney heritage warehouse quarter typified by masonry buildings. The design responds to several significant heritage aspects of the rich and diverse precinct context through careful consideration of the ground plane, street wall, podium elements and adjacent buildings.

An elegant glazed tower form is articulated as four independent tower volumes and rises above a robust brick podium which occupies the entire site. The contemporary dry-pressed face brick aligns with the parapet and materiality of adjoining buildings, adding to the rich and textured environment expressed in the precinct’s history

Influenced by the size of the site and requirement to provide a street wall, the podium workplace floorplates are deep; to draw daylight in, the podium edges were eroded with the introduction of balconies and lightwells. Designed to deliver the best commercial floorplates achievable, the tower floors above, are flexible and easily sub-divisible.

The highly permeable ground plane features a fine-grain network of laneways, including Barrack Arcade - a 24-hour publicly accessible through-site link. The edge is activated by a mix of specialty retail tenancies and public art installation. A second through-site link, The Carriageway, draws on the language of the old coach lanes providing more intimate spaces with central courtyard, mezzanine, commercial suites and retail offering.

Barrack Place is the first building in Australia to receive WELL Core and Shell Gold Precertification from the IWBI™ and has also achieved 6 Star Green Star Office Design v3 certification from GBCA.
