MPavilion is Australia’s leading architectural commission and design event conceived and created by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation.

Every year one new temporary pavilion is designed by a leading international architect becoming a design and cultural laboratory, and home to a free four-month program of talks, workshops, performances and installations. MPavilion 2018 is the fifth pavilion in the annual series and is designed by Barcelona-based architect Carme Pinós of Estudio Carme Pinós.

The brief asks the architect to create not only an architectural space, but a container of ideas incorporating the highest level of design thinking, innovations, experimentation and engagement for the city of Melbourne. The design and central location of the pavilion invite citizens to become more engaged with their own urban landscape and the urban challenges facing our cities and regions, through an active connection and engagement with their environment and community.

The sharp geometric design of the pavilion reveals an open civic space that invites interaction as well as a discourse between people, design, nature and the city. The structure’s interconnected shapes dissolve the lines between architecture and urbanism, easing the relationship between the material, environmental and human.

The design has inspired MPavilion’s program themes which include: building communities, fostering inclusive cities, women in leadership, visual languages: fashion and architecture, regional contexts, and landscape and nature. MPavilion 2018 was the largest program to date, welcoming more than 133,000 visitors over 520 free events.

The World Architecture News Awards showcase the best international design in both current and future projects. Entries for the 2019 Awards are now open - for further information and to submit your entry please click here.
