Our design for this house in Byron Bay would not be possible elsewhere. It is uniquely influenced by the land upon which it will be built.

There is a purity to the central pavilion’s geometry. Its grandeur and theatre sweeps you within, then offers an intimacy at a human scale. The grand scale then returns as the building opens out to embrace the landscape beyond.

The kitchen boldly opens up an entire wall, giving the central pavilion light and purpose. Central services (such as laundries and powder rooms) remain hidden.

Embracing the wonderful temperate climate, when the glazed façade is opened in warmer months, there are no barriers between interiors and landscape. In winter, the house cocoons. By contrast, the garden pavilion by the pool is always open to sea breezes.

There are two pavilions flanking the central pavilion. One of these is the main bedroom suite with private living quarters, and the other is the children’s pavilion, designed for the second and third generation with living rooms and wellness centers. Guests are accommodated in separate suites.

Like the expressive form, the selection of materials is of the earth – stone, steel, timber and glass, which is repeated throughout in subtle colours and finishes. With great care, the landscape is regenerating indigenous flora to seamlessly connect with the wilderness.

At its essence, this house welcomes, inspires and nurtures you. Offering a series of sensory experiences rarely found in one residence.
