2019 WAN Awards: JW Marriott Nashville - Arquitectonica & Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart

JW Marriott Nashville - Arquitectonica & Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart is an entry in the Facade category at the 2019 World Architecture News Awards.

by Alison Carter 27 June 2019 2019

The JW Marriott Nashville is a 386-foot-tall, 800,000-square-foot luxury hotel nestled among the busy streets of Music City, USA. The hotel’s 33-story elliptical glass tower offers stunning views of the city from all 533 guest rooms, as well as a high-end restaurant.

Taking inspiration from surrounding landmarks, design architect Arquitectonica and architect of record Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart designed the hotel with a unique, curvilinear shape that created an icon in the heart of the city.

The building systems were designed with innovation, performance and economics in mind. YKK AP America was challenged with creating a curvilinear building envelope with a continuously changing radius, consisting completely of window wall. Utilizing the new YWW 50 TU Thermally Broken Window Wall System, YKK AP analyzed the continuously changing radius of the project and developed three custom, uniform mullions that hinged among themselves, creating a fluid line around the building.

The restaurant projecting out from the 33rd floor stands out as a seamless, defining feature of the hotel’s exterior façade. Architects carefully considered how their design would keep the building skin of the mezzanine level looking uniform with the other floors in the tower while also making the restaurant stand out.

Sitting at the corner of Eighth and Demonbreun, the JW Marriott Nashville is conscious of its visible connection to the city. It welcomes visitors in and out of the core of the city with its iconic presence, helping Nashville’s visitors sing in the streets today - and for decades to come.
