The timber pavilion “Bris” (Swedish for ‘breeze’), was commissioned by the Carl Eldh Studio Museum, as part of an exhibition showcasing the architecture of Rahel Belatchew and the office Belatchew.
It has been a century since Carl Eldh, one of Sweden’s most eminent sculptors, inaugurated his studio in Bellevue Park, Stockholm. The building was designed by his friend Ragnar Östberg, arguably one of Sweden’s most prominent architects, best known for designing the Stockholm City Hall.
For the jubilee in 2019, architecture is in focus at the Carl Eldh’s Studio Museum with an exhibition by Rahel Belatchew. According to the museum, Rahel Belatchew’s architecture is characterized by its bold, sculptural buildings with strong innovation addressing challenges of today and tomorrow.
Both Ragnar Östberg and Rahel Belatchew emphasize sustainability in their architecture, using natural and recycled building materials in their projects.
One such project is “Bris”, a unique outdoor space made in timber, located in the studio’s garden, creating a dialogue with Ragnar Östberg’s loggia.
The design idea of “Bris” originates from Belatchew’s proposal for Sweden’s Expo 2020 Dubai pavilion. The roof takes inspiration from the trees and the archetypical pitched roof of the cottages found in the Swedish archipelago. The sun is filtered through the transparent roof recreating the feeling of being in a coniferous forest.
