Previously a closed business park, The Australian Technology Park (ATP) was to open its doors and extend its facilities for the use of the community-at-large. Additional amenities were to include a mixed-use building to ground-level retail spaces, wellness and health facilities and a childcare and community centre in the heart of the site.
As part of its community outreach endeavour, a key symbolic feature of the scheme is the redeveloped urban rooftop garden. The garden provides a green retreat for members of the Indigenous community as well as creating a connection to the neighbouring park on ground level. The building sits on a base platform of stone, that further affirms the building’s relationship to the open green adjacent to it. A community centre and childcare facilities sit on the level atop this—both open to generous views of the park. The childcare centre, however, is enveloped in a glass box with vertical white slats. The slats act as a shading device and privacy screen, particularly for the little messes that occur within.
Located on the corner of Davy Road and Central Avenue at the southern gateway to the ATP precinct, the Community Building is envisioned as a landmark development that aims to be a successful public hub incorporating forward thinking design.
Underlying principles focus on creating a new community minded building, open and permeable that encourages participation and promotes creativity and health. An honest and flexible building that combines technology and nature, to deliver best practice in sustainability.
