RBB Architects Inc. was commissioned by the County of Los Angeles to design, plan, replace and consolidate major outdated components of the Harbor UCLA teaching hospital; a 77-acre campus, which has been selected to be the official hospital of the 2028 Olympics.

The Inpatient Tower is comprised of two triangular nursing towers connected at the heart of the building by a bright and welcoming grand lobby for family and visitors. Each floor of this 8 story tower houses 28 beds and has been configured to create a compassionate and healing environment that improves patient outcomes and encourages collaboration.

In addition to the open plan, staff lounges have been incorporated on the east and west corner of each nursing tower triangle, which provides the staff with some of the most coveted city and harbor views. The nursing units have a cheery, playful, and open feeling and are designed in a fashion as to minimize long corridors by introducing alcoves to access patient rooms. RBB Architects Inc. uses lean planning principles to maximize space program to gross building area, thus creating an extremely lean and sustainable structure ‘The most sustainable space is the one that you don’t build’.

On their journey throughout the campus, patient, staff, visitors, and faculty will enjoy strolling along a well lit and airy promenade that connects all the new and existing structures of the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
