RBB Architects Inc. was commissioned by the County of Los Angeles to design, plan, replace and consolidate major outdated components of the Harbor UCLA teaching hospital; a 77-acre campus, which has been selected to be the official hospital of the 2028 Olympics.

The purpose of this project was to create a hospital that promotes healing and wellbeing, as well as being a state of the future facility. Our design carefully takes into consideration the needs of the patients and the hospital employees – creating an environment conducive of improving healing and patient outcome.

The Outpatient Tower itself is approximately 500,000 square feet – our goal in master planning the buildings on campus was to consolidate and connect all the existing structures under one roof, and greatly reduce travel paths and times for patients and staff.

Using lean planning and innovative architectural principles, RBB Architects Inc. was able to take this large and greatly fragmented campus, composed of over 40 buildings, 60% of which are remaining WWII military structures; and develop it into a cohesive campus to encourage collaborative care, that is able to change and expand at any given time in order to satisfy changes in healthcare trends and user needs.

The basis for design of the Outpatient Tower is a simple rectangle driven by the rigorous modular design of clinical functions. In order to maximize the design opportunity we resolved to enhance the building design by creating a dynamic and playful envelope that is unique to this type of healthcare facility.
