Patrons of architecture and collectors of art and design objects, our clients were drawn to the iconic Zaha Hadid building, located along Manhattan’s famed High Line.
The studio was immediately intrigued by the project because of previous interactions with Ms. Hadid and our admiration of her work. We carefully studied the given floor plan, examining Zaha’s intent for the interior of the unit.
After much consideration and with deep respect for the original intent, our clients made the bold decision to abandon the planned layout and start from scratch. A rarity in New York, the new plan opens the heart of the unit to views of the City and Hudson River, allowing natural light to penetrate from all directions.
The design draws in the steel of the exterior façade and pairs it with a palate of oak, plaster, stone, and glass to create a tactile container for our clients’ vintage furniture and contemporary art collection. A collection of stone vessels designed to contain and convey water and in the case of the tub, to cradle the body, the vessels were CNC carved from solid blocks of Pietra Cardosa.
The floor plan maintains Zaha’s original concept of dividing kitchen and living spaces with an iconic art piece: In this case, the art piece by Veronika Kellndorfer is a photo of the home of Lina Bo Bardi, an architect revered by Zaha herself—a fitting homage to these two distinguished female architects.
