Is there anything more tediously wasteful than your elevator commute? That little slice of hell between your car and workplace, crammed full of awkward conversations, mysterious smells and bad music.

When approached for the design of the new headquarter offices for Farmacias del Ahorro in Monterrey, Mexico, our client was expecting a tower. However, once we analyzed the site and programme we realized a tall building in this location would result in a largely western facing façade. An error in Mexico’s northern desert climate.

“An office building where employees rather take stairs than elevators”, became our driving concept. We managed to change our client’s desire for a tower by developing a smart, low-rise building which opens-up to northern daylight and shields itself from the western sun, while being fully connected through a series of escalators, stairs and bridges.

rom the outdoor sidewalk staircase to the bridges connecting both wings of the project over the northern courtyard. This chain of circulation elements, create moments and spaces through the building where employees can crosspollinate, replacing cramped and awkward elevator rides for vibrant and open discussion spaces.

Using all of the available views, the V-Shaped plan of the Farmacias del Ahorro Hequarters (Corporativo Farmacias del Ahorro CFA in Spanish) working spaces are distributed all along its façade, leaving the central and darker sections of the floor plate for meeting rooms and vertical cores. This arrangement allows for every employee to have open views of the city.
