Effective space for Beirut penthouse apartment

Jessica Evans
10 Jul 2019

Located in the Ashrafieh district that’s known for its lively streets during the 60s, the bachelor penthouse apartment, Mallorca, has multiple levels and reflects the popular vibes of a city that is home to fashion designers, performing arts venues, art galleries and trendy cafes.

“For this project, we converted a small studio into a three-level penthouse, providing a very modern and efficient living space overlooking a historic district,” Nisrine Nasr, Co-Founder & Interior Designer, Askdeco.

Originally, the client felt the space’s functions and comfort might be restricted, however, Askdeco confronted those aspects by proposing opening up the space. With the client’s approval, the designers set to work and tailored the layout to the client’s needs.

“A design concept can sometimes be difficult for a client to visualize, but seeing it all worked out on paper can bring a design scheme into focus and help the client to understand the direction that you are taking them in.” - Nasr.

The objective was to create a more light-filled, open space. To do this, they expanded the size of the windows, making them floor-to-ceiling, allowing for more light to be let in. The views of the streets below and increase in light helps add a sense of more space.

In order to connect all three levels of the penthouse, a winding staircase was designed to be at the core of Mallorca. Finished with a mesh baluster and a mirror handrail, the staircase has become a ‘multi-dimensional centerpiece’ that gives a ‘sky-high illusion’.

Working with the client, a mood board was developed to choose the best colour themes and designs that would complement the layout. Neutral colours were selected, along with Mediterranean grey-white marble walls and muted grey wood to blend with its surroundings.

Keeping to the client’s plans for a ‘masculine’ scheme, Mallorca features metal finishes throughout the space, whilst a multipurpose sink was installed at the entrance as well as a walk-in closet that connects the washroom and the bedroom.

“The clients always have something in mind, and our job is to work with them step-by-step to tie it all together. If something they envision detracts from a space or decreases its volume, we try our best to change their minds with some innovative alternatives.” - Nasr.

The main floor includes the reception area with a small adjoining terrace, which was considered to be unusable by the client, however, Askdeco turned the space into a visual stimulant by adding trees to enhance the beauty of the views. The middle level features the living and dining areas with artwork by Ramon Aular and Mediterranean furnishings by Maxalto and Fornasetti. The upper floor is completed with the master and guest bedrooms with a vanity area that offers panoramic views of the city.
