Education: key stepping stone throughout life

Worldwide examples of improving educational facilities via transforming architecture seen in WAN Awards.

The Bamboo children activity centre is a children's rural public welfare academy, which is located in Xiamutang village, Wan 'an county, Jiangxi province. It aims to solve the literacy issues found in this rural location using technology and keeping costs low. The project faced many challenges including a 20 day construction period, difficult rural construction conditions  and lack of construction technology. This site is close to the ancestral temple, and it is also the only way for villagers to go up the mountain.

Sydney University’s new Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) aims to express the transformation of Australia’s oldest university campus through a restrained and timeless expression of connection, collaboration, community, art and heritage. Comprising a new teaching facility and extensive refurbishment of the heritage RD Watt Building, architectus’ design responds to the University’s “Wingara Mura” Strategy, expressing an understanding of the former landscape, broader campus context and strong cultural connections.

The University of Toronto’s Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation & Entrepreneurship heralds a new era in engineering education, designed to break down barriers between disciplines, facilitate collaboration, encourage active learning, accelerate innovation, and develop entrepreneurial talent. The building includes a 468-seat lecture theatre, state-of-the-art collaborative classrooms, workshops, makerspaces and light fabrication facilities as well as several multidisciplinary research centres and institutes.

The Keck Center for Science and Technology at Chapman University occupies a significant site on campus directly adjacent to the university football field and iconic student center. The building presents a permeable, welcoming face to the campus and surrounding community, organized to take advantage of spaces outside the classrooms, labs and offices, creating an interactive environment where ideas and knowledge are shared and developed. The heart of the building consists of a variety of gathering spaces.

The transformation of the Robert L. Bogomolny Library respects the memory and history of the original library design while simultaneously modernizing it to meet contemporary research, scholarship, archival and environmental demands. The original massing concept of the library is substantially maintained, that of the “floating box”.
