Viacom HQ design: supporting global strategy and play

Inspired by the iconic New York City loft, new workspace design aims to inspire play, global strategy and make employees feel at home.

by Alison Carter 17 September 2019

In the heart of Times Square, New York, Perkins and Will’s design team have delivered an energized workspace for the firm’s global marketing and legal teams, serving a legacy of broadcast brands worldwide from MTV, to Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.

The design, a homage to the iconic New York City loft, is grounded the design in the media company's cultural and geographical roots. Workplaces are designed to be professional yet familial, from lounge-inspired break-rooms to awe-inspiring boardrooms boasting towering views over midtown Manhattan.

Viacom’s interactive and creative working ethos has been woven into the design by way of a colour-your-own-wall covering, meaning employees can use the walls to express, explore, and invite creativity.

Neon wayfinding and signage add color while allowing the layering on of multiple brand expressions for the diverse groups that make up the company’s whole.

There is a diverse selection of informal work stations for the agile workforce.  The design scheme is built on a strong black and white base with natural wood colours and lively, stand-out graphics splashed on the walls, embodying the industrial edge of a classic New York loft.

Open floor layouts are carved out into ‘neighbourhoods’ and broken up with open workspaces bordered by low partitions. Clear-coat concrete floors and even-toned work stations feature black metal accents and wood-top surfaces, while exposed high ceilings further emulate a classic loft-style design.

In a nod to the urbanism and iconic views surrounding the tower, each quadrant across two of the three redesigned floors is dedicated to a specific region or country. Quirky, hand-doodled skylines line the distraction banding on full glass windows, sketching various major cityscapes from around the world.
