Resting and relaxing: hotels reborn in Mallorca and Dubrovnik

Entries highlight trends in WAN Awards hotels, bed-and-breakfast facilities and other overnight accommodation category

Can Bordoy is a small hotel with a magnificent garden located in the center of Palma de Mallorca. Finished in January 2019, its complete renovation of a 2.500sqm abandoned building that had been intervened throughout its more than 500 years of history.

The intention was to evoke the experience of visiting a house rather than a hotel. Therefore, rather than being at a hotel reception, the clients meet at the entrance hall of the house, and instead of a restaurant guests will find a residential dining room with the living rooms being similar to those you would find in an old house.

Situated just above Dubrovnik’s old town, Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik was originally built in the 1890s and went on to serve the great Mediterranean cruise liners docking in the city in the early 20th century. Originally named ‘The Grand Hotel Imperial’ and Dubrovnik’s first modern hotel, it became an immediate hit, with a French Riviera feel and the glamorous cachet of an international clientele. The hotel was subsequently shelled during the Yugoslav war.

The brief to Goddard Littlefair was to unlock the true potential of the four-storey hotel’s spectacular location, architecture, reputation and history, in order to appeal to today’s sophisticated and cosmopolitan traveller. The main design challenge was to ensure that the new interiors reflected the hotel’s incredible history, both alluding to and recreating its glamorous heritage, whilst also ensuring it had a thoroughly contemporary sophistication.
