Scandinavia, Australia and India: unique and memorable future visions

Diverse approaches incorporate natural surroundings for the benefit of many

Rob Mills Architecture & Interior’ design for a house in Byron Bay would not be possible elsewhere. It is uniquely influenced by the land upon which it will be built. There is a purity to the central pavilion’s geometry. Its grandeur and theatre sweeps you within, then offers an intimacy at a human scale. The grand scale then returns as the building opens out to embrace the landscape beyond.

Like the expressive form, the selection of materials is of the earth – stone, steel, timber and glass, which is repeated throughout in subtle colours and finishes. With great care, the landscape is regenerating indigenous flora to seamlessly connect with the wilderness.

Njordrum create houses focusing on architecture and not size. Wienberg Architects are inspired by the Scandinavian values and know that when you have a light, well planned space and a strong relation between interior and exterior, the amount of square meter is no longer essential to whether the house feels big or small.

Wienberg Architects approach sustainability as a part of the human life cycle. The modules designed by Njordrum are built and designed in organic materials like wood, which in terms of resource and degradation is the most responsible building material. They are also placed directly on point foundations, which require far fewer resources than a solid foundation. At the same time, this method means that the home is movable, and therefore can follow you and your needs over time.

The Residential Complex for Indian Institute of Technology campus comprises of multi-storied residential buildings for faculty & staff housing. It also includes residence for the Institute’s Director, a club, guest house, medical centre, shopping centre, community halls, creche and campus school. The total built-up area is 112, 000 sq.m., estimated to cost $65 million, designed over a site area of about 43 acres.

The complex has been conceived as a waterfront development, with housing units placed along the promenade around a man-made body of water. The shaded promenade along the water provides relief as well as an oasis-like landscape. The scale of the water has been kept such that the distances between buildings are reasonable, thereby minimising infrastructure costs and amenities remaining within easy walking distance.
