Emerging Interiors Practice of the Year

Gold: The Stella Collective

The Stella Collective is a global interior practice based in Melbourne, Australia led by award winning interior designer Hana Hakim.

Our studio celebrates interior experiences that understand how we humans work, eat and play. We pride ourselves on creating exceptional world-class interiors that bring people together. Our design is known to have a timeless quality that touches the human core. In this acutely digital age, as physical and sensory beings we believe there’s a primal need to surround ourselves with meaningful beauty.

We have created a design language of authenticity, soulfulness and excitement, to help us bond; connect with others, and importantly to ourselves.

Our design philosophy is based on impactful principles for positive change. Hana’s time and experiences spent in her family’s homeland of Syria has propelled a desire to inspire curiosity through great design.

TSC prescribes to this mantra “Our environment, no matter where, whether it be a rockin’ hotel, hospitality venue, a workplace that embodies wellbeing or even a small village in the Middle East, we believe that beauty is for everyone, always.” We focus our design on these principles.

Through our interiors we are able to breathe new life into businesses, shift workplace cultures and create spaces of wellbeing and celebration.

Since 2015 TSC has been recognised in numerous awards including The 2018 Frame People’s Choice: ‘Casa Artedomus’. WIN Awards:The Kettle Black 2015, WIN Awards Highly commended: Memocorp office 2017, WIN Awards Finalist: Redroaster 2018, and have contributed to numerous design publications across the globe.

Silver: STUDIO DOHO

Studio Doho was formed in 2016 with a simple idea: We Create Excitement. Doho, a blend of the founder’s surnames, is a collaboration between architects Xin Dogterom (Dutch-Chinese) and Jason Holland (USA) which aims to explore experience-based design that creates excitement. We are storytellers at heart and use design to explore the possibilities and interactions of people in space.

Founded as a boutique design office in Shanghai, our work is a fusion of international perspective and local understanding of Shanghai’s global design ambition. We have completed, or are currently working on, over 40 projects in China which include a diverse collection of F&B, retail, office and lifestyle projects.

Like a great story, we start our design with the end in mind and then craft a narrative that tells the client’s story through color, material and texture. The end result is an experience that captures the imagination of the client and is focused on creating excitement.

We deliver projects ranging from high-end to eccentric, under the constraints of small spaces, tight budgets and short timelines. Our desire to deliver great work drives us to work closely with contractors and spend generous amounts of time on-site during construction to ensure a great result.

We have quickly become a recognized named in the Shanghai interior design scene and are building a presence internationally with publications in multiple media outlets. Most recently we were Highly Commended in the 2018 WIN Awards Emerging Interiors Practice of the Year category.

Bronze: Studioshaw

Since founding in 2016 there has been steady growth for studioshaw in turnover, project delivery client base and profile. We doubled our turnover in 2017/18. We grew from three employees to five, plus two part time. We completed two permanent projects and one temporary project and received repeat commissions from three clients who we value.

We won three significant commissions which allowed the practice to grow and develop significantly, including a 200 seat theatre in East London. Our HB Reavis project was won in an open competition and resulted in the largest fee earning project for us to date. Kindred was a challenging brief and programme and delivered on time and on budget.

We have acquired and fitted out our own office space, in a ground floor unit in Shoreditch. We have a shop front window, display our work and importantly a door to the pedestrian street, which we leave open.

Our instagram feed has grown to 1300 followers. We attended MIPIM where Mark wrote the daily blog for the Architects Journal and we were represented on the RIBA stand. In this period we also attended a number of key industry events including attending the RIBA Gorilla Tactics Conference, the AJ Summit, MIPIM, Propski, and became members of the NLA.

We continue to develop the practice processes. These include quarterly staff reviews, building visits and a cultural programme which includes monthly Friday night events. We have become sponsors of Architecture LGBT, a RIBA organisation.

Bronze: ZGF Architects

In close collaboration with our clients, the ZGF interiors practice designs environments that respond to and reflect their unique brand, culture, and functional needs.

True to every ZGF project is a commitment to high performance and human-centric interior design. Our interiors are purposeful, with every detail carefully chosen for fit and feel. Materiality, fine detailing and thoughtfully executed spatial layout are hallmarks of a ZGF interior.

Rigorous sustainability measures including LEED, WELL building, Living Building Challenge, and net zero energy are woven into every ZGF design. Rather than viewing these as nice-to-have additions to an interiors program, we see them as fundamental attributes of responsible design and occupant health and performance. In this way, function, beauty and environmental responsibility are thoughtfully entwined in all ZGF interior projects.
