People mover in Chicago

The newly developed Multi-Modal Terminal at is built to connect the airport’s ground transportation options in one spot.

by Katie Henry 01 November 2019

The airport connects to the airline terminals by a 1-½ mile extension of the Airport Transit System (ATS) also called a people mover, creating a welcoming and convenient gateway to Chicago for arriving visitors.

The terminal is designed to let in lots of sunlight and offers customers 13 rental car companies, regional buses and hotel shuttles, as well as access to suburban train services. Food, beverage and merchandise concessions are also available. Original art has been commissioned by The City of Chicago for the project, pieces including Horizon Light by James Carpenter, Field Lines by Rob Ley and Sound Suit by Nick Cave.

The carpark is a five level concrete parking structure that contains a consolidated rental car centre (CONRAC) with 4,500 ready/return car capacity, as well as public parking for 2,600 cars and a multilevel, quick-turn-around fueling and wash facility.

The new Multi-Modal Terminal is built to remove up to 1.3 vehicles each year from the central terminal roadways, resulting in a reduction in traffic and carbon dioxide emissions in the airport core. It is predicted to receive Silver Certification in the US Buildings Council Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) program recognizing sustainable design.
