Seamless flooring, inside and out

Casa MM is a rural courtyard house made in a contemporary interpretation.

by Katie Henry 21 November 2019 Surfaces

While the south-western side opens to the countryside, the other three sides feature thick walls that create privacy for those who live there. The entrance and external courtyard walls are made with a large stone-effect porcelain stoneware tiles from the Pietre di Paragone collection in Pietra Piasentina.

The interior and exterior flooring both used tiles from the Pietra Baugè collection to ensure continuity, although there are different surfaces according to the different rooms. The homogeneous coverings reflect the distinctive features of the infinity pool, the courtyard and the house, and the porcelain stoneware tiles present the building to be overpowered by the rigorous volumes.

The living area is held in the entrance body houses while the dining and bedroom areas are placed in the two side bodies. The three volumes are similar but individually distinguished, with their roofs subtly sloping towards the pool letting in the sun. The fourth volume is lower than the others and separates them while also connecting them through a covered pathway. The buildings revolve around the pool and all rooms have large windows overlooking the courtyard, connecting the intimate courtyard with the external garden.

The large cladding tiles on the walls create a façade with a seamless texture and in the courtyard they design a continuous band including on the windows overlooking the pool and matching the rhythm of the sliding brise soleils. They also underline the front door niche in the façade of the entrance, highlighting where visitors can get inside the house, using porcelain stoneware tiles of the Pietre di Paragone collection in Pietra Piasentina.

The use of exterior flooring Baugè Antracite tiles around the pool allowed dry floating installation and keep rainwater away. The interior flooring is made of a Baugè Antracite carpet made with tiles of a 10 mm thickness and a natural finish that runs through all the rooms, reiterating the continuity between the interiors and exteriors. Additionally the porcelain stoneware tiles were rectified to ensure perfect, continuous joint alignment in both directions between the interiors and exteriors.

The porcelain stoneware surfaces connect together in their colour, grain and patterns to create textural references. It’s a design that’s perfect for people who wish to live in the countryside, combining a love for the outdoors and the need for privacy.
