2020 WAN Awards entry: Oriental Movie Metropolis Grand Theater - GDF LTD

Oriental Movie Metropolis Grand Theater by GDF LTD is an entry in the Civic category of the 2020 WAN Awards

Embedded within Starry Island’s bay, the Oriental Movie Metropolis Grand Theatre was designed to present the force and spirit of the coastal city. Appearing as if sculpted by nature, the building seamlessly blends in with the symbol, a transfusion of Qingdao culture.

On the exterior, the architecture references the metaphorical symbol of the conch. The resulting curvilinear facade composed of smooth white aluminum panels and vivid orange glass becomes the poetry of edge and surface, softness and sharpness, order and randomness.

Upon entering the grand lobby, visitors will see sizeable transparent glass walls spanning around. A lifting crystalline glass curtain wall covers the grand lobby space with the support of a lightweight diagrid structure, visually connecting the glittering curvilinear interior with the swooping facade and exterior surface. Presenting an inviting element, the grand theater is clad in luxurious pearl, emulating the inner space of conch. From the proscenium to the mezzanine balcony the use of simple materials and spatial configuration provides world-class acoustics.

With the aid of symbolic representation, the Oriental Movie Metropolis Grand Theatre deepens the emotional connection between the visitors and environment. The architecture is consequently theatrical in both its performance of narrative spaces and its context within the landscape.
