Inspired by the region's rich cultural resources and slow life philosophy, MAS presents an innovative living design where the elderly community can revitalize mind and bodies through a dynamic spatial interplay of radiating lines and zones that encourages natural immersions, joyful socialization and inner reflection. A multiplicity of courtyards in the design complex unveils along moving lines, presenting undulating spaces, perspectival lines, and pathways, for experiential delight.

An open-ended sequence of partial and all-embracing centers defines the site, likening the opening of a Chinese ink painting scroll. The space pays tribute to the unique traditions of Chengdu culture where intersecting spaces fostering conversations and activities enables family-like relationships across the community.

The Shu Garden project pays tribute to the traditional Sichuan housing by utilizing a dense lining of columns, layered in stacks and supportive structures, evoking the so-called “Thousand Footed Columns” legacy of Szechuan architectural aesthetics. Local culture and sustainability are considered in the choice of construction materials such as the use of camphor wood carvings and decorative green roof tiles with overhanging eaves in the renowned Shu architectural style.

The top of the ridge is raised while the middle is lined with floral motifs, restoring the decorative characteristics of Sichuan architecture details. An organic hybridity reflecting the rich layers of history, tradition, and modernism of the Chengdu culture is embodied in this dynamic re-conception of senior citizens living for a renewal of life and enhancement of life quality.
