The end-of-terrace house with an extension was built in the 1950s as part of a post WWII residential housing development scheme. After the resident passed away her son commissioned his daughter, a young architect, to renovate and rebuild her grandma’s home.

The seven bedroom dwelling was stripped to its bare walls, the ground floor rooms merged into one to answer today’s standard of living: an open kitchen and living room with a wide view and access to the garden in the south.

A new, second bathroom on the second floor allows the master bedroom to be placed at the top of the three-storey house. Here, the roof framework is rebuilt including three large dormer windows.

The highlight of the project is a large sit-in-window on the east facade overpeering the surrounding tree tops. Besides the stunning view out it allows a lot of daylight into the space where there was gloominess and storage space before.

Grey Jura limestone, a stone found in the nearby alps, clads entrance and bathrooms whilst oak timber boards provide for a homely experience.

The nearby river supplies a newly built water heat pump which then supports the dwelling with the domestic hot water. A photovoltaic plant on the roof generates electricity. The external walls were insulated with recycled rock wool, the roof with wood-wool slabs, the windows are triple glazed wooden windows. An infiltration ditch was built into the front garden to dry up the basement walls.
