2020 WAN Awards entry: The Red Barn - Cecconi Simone Inc.

The Red Barn by Cecconi Simone Inc. is an entry in the Adaptive Reuse Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

by Copy taken from 2020 entry 27 May 2020 2020

Located approximately 120 km west of Toronto, Canada, this 2.3 acre property includes a 725 sq m barn dating to the early 1800s. After many years of disuse and minimal maintenance, the property and barn were derelict. The design brief was to restore the property and convert it to residential usage while maintaining the authenticity and character of the barn.

For heritage purposes and modernization, every aspect of the property was restored. While the interiors are not considered heritage, it was important to restore and enhance the barn features – to create continuity from the exterior to the interior - while adapting to its new purpose.

The guestrooms are located in the former stables on the lower level: Georgian wire glass was added for privacy as well as door sweeps for acoustics and locks for the bathrooms.

On the main level, the timber structure drove the programing: the kitchen is the hub and is centered under the roof peak which rises 13.5 m. A feature wall was added to screen the fridges and wall ovens from the entry hall. The lounge and dining area flank the kitchen. Below the mezzanine are the wine room/powder room and guest room.

For the master suite, the layout fell naturally within its four-quadrant structure: the lounge occupies two, the sleep area the third and master bath the fourth. North-facing skylights and massive windows provide light-filled spaces with a fantastic view to the pond, lavender garden and boat shed.
