2020 WAN Awards entry: Baylor, Scott & White Sports Therapy and Research Center at The Star - Perkins and Will

Baylor, Scott & White Sports Therapy and Research Center at The Star by Perkins and Will is an entry in the Healthcare Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

Creating a nexus for athletes (professional, student or otherwise) and their caretakers (physicians, researchers, physical therapists, and trainers), this 91,440 sq m sports therapy and research facility is a collaborative first for a sports franchise (Dallas Cowboys) and a major-health system.

It operates as a social and scientific catalyst facilitating the complex interplay between human biology, comprehensive health, training, and recovery combining sports medicine (outpatient imaging, surgery, urgent care, medical offices, and a pharmacy) with sports wellness (training, research, and rehabilitation) and sport performance (basketball court, indoor/outdoor playing field, and gym).

The nine-story building with its prominent, glazed facades is broken into two-distinct volumes, visually sliced by a soaring plane that cantilevers out to the south. The architectural plan strategically supports the identity of each program group while fostering collaboration between diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation zones.

Layered, transparent spaces and circulation erase division between programs and put simultaneous activities on display. The transparency also showcases the human body in motion, creating a “living brand” experience celebrating athleticism and physical fitness. This is especially evident at the football field where a 9 m tall, retractable glass wall extends the field outside and into the community.

Mitigating its heavy solar gain with low-e glazing and a large brise-soleil, this expansive southern wall allows the field, open or closed, to connect with its community spectators while reducing stress on the interior thermal environment.
