Around 2000, to promote the image of urban culture and improve the urban living quality, there was a trend for Chinese provincial cities to erect public facilities like grand theatres, urban exhibition halls and grand stadiums.

Zhuji New Theater is located in the southeast corner of Citizen's Park in Chengdong Area of Zhuji City, Zhejiang Province. The client hopes that together with Zhuji Planning Exhibition Hall on the south, it can become a new cultural landmark, also showcasing the local heritage in the traditional drama, and creating an urban space that can be actively used.

Since it is located at a corner of a large central park, the designer has decided to minimize and bring back the boundaries of the close structures under the full management to the uttermost, while making other spaces more integrated with the park and open for free use.

According to the functional requirements, the building is divided into two parts. The main structure with oval shape sits in the north center, and outer circular ring-like structure accommodates all the other functions, just like a floating light right in the city. An open interior and exterior plaza with greenery are formed between these two structures. On the one hand, it successfully reduces the pressure on surrounding urban space caused by the tremendous volume of the theatre.

On the other hand, the natural undulating form of the outer ring structure not only highlight a vivid image of the main entrance, but also bring in excellent urban scenery effect.
