2020 WAN Awards entry: Renovation of Ancient Village – Han Ling - DC Alliance

Renovation of Ancient Village – Han Ling by DC Alliance is an entry in the Adaptive Reuse Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

by Copy taken from 2020 entry 02 June 2020 2020

Han Ling is not a fictional tourist attraction, nor is it a historical remnant. There are still aborigines living here. Therefore, instead of being a creator, we chose to be a humble mending craftsman in this renovation project. Taking town’s texture as the most important consideration, more than eighty houses in the ancient town were restored and newly built in different ways. By using three different strategies: “Protect”, “Repair” and “Newly built with cautiousness”, we are aiming to integrate into the town without only showing oneself.

“Blossom Hill” is located at the front of Water Street. Its original building was the main hall of Pei Jun Temple with special architectural style while being seriously damaged. Therefore, we chose to integrate its façade reconstruction which enriched with regional characteristics into the design of the ancient village and extend the original characteristics of the courtyard to its basic structure.

The newly built "HanLingYinXiang" is at the end of Han Ling village, which is not only an extension of the village, but also a gathering place for new comers. For showing respects to the patriarchal etiquette and residential traditions of the ancient town, the design renews and reorganizes the building on the basis of the five courtyard prototypes to ensure that each household satisfies "one household with three courtyards" and meets the needs of multi-household communication and sharing, and privacy of each single household at the same time.
