2020 WAN Awards entry: Mukogawa Women's University Koe Memorial Building - Takenaka Corporation

Mukogawa Women's University Koe Memorial Building by Takenaka Corporation is an entry in the Education Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

by Copy taken from 2020 entry 03 June 2020 2020

This is a construction project for the new business school of Mukogawa women’s university.

To provide the opportunity to learn the adoptable skill set for developing careers through the whole stage of women’s life, we aim to establish a new learning environment to foster diverse values through interaction with students, faculties, and alumni in the large community of the university.

Therefore, we created “Shared Studios”, where people can share their knowledge. By making the three-dimensional continuous space, we remove barriers for communication. This environment enables students to learn actively and develop their interests. Two different types of learning spaces with research (LAB Floor) and practice (COLAB Floor) are stacked and connected loosely through the void. The spaces create a deal open but calm environment that students can focus on their study and yet stimulate each other.

On the COLAB Floors (3rd, 5th, 7th floor), we establish open and flexible learning spaces, Fabrication Laboratory and Project Lounge, to introduce new styles of class beyond the departments such as project-based classes and lectures. Furthermore, the Guest Lounge, which is coworking space for external guests, connects the students with society constantly, and creates space for collaborative projects.

On the LAB floors (4th, 6th, 8th floor), the Office Lounge is created by minimizing ordinary closed individual offices. It provides a common space for the faculty and encourages their interaction. And there are Communication Counters (the refresh spaces) with kitchenettes. The spaces promote informal communication between the students and the faculties.
