2020 WAN Awards entry: Thai Japanese Association School Bangkok Junior High School Building - Takenaka Corporation

Thai Japanese Association School Bangkok Junior High School Building by Takenaka Corporation is an entry in the Education Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

by Copy taken from 2020 entry 03 June 2020 2020

This is a junior high school building of Japanese School in Bangkok, Thailand.

As a school that provides education for Japanese students in Thailand, we aimed to create a school that has a sense of Japan-Thailand while having diversity and internationality. At the same time, we took advantage of SDGs environment friendly considerations to create a space.

Taking advantage of the mild climate that is unique to Southeast Asia throughout the year, the space was constructed around a semi-outdoor corridor and atrium. A prevailing wind from the southwest is introduced from the end of the open corridor and pulled out from the upper part of the stairwell to realize a school that allows the wind to pass through.

In addition, this spacious semi-outdoor space and the pilotis space is a great playfield for children in the rainy season in Southeast Asia where squalls fall.

On the other hand, the 3m eaves prevents the severe tropical sunlight from invading the living room. This 3m eaves is a solar radiation control device, and also has multi-functional elements such as air conditioner outdoor units storage space, maintenance space, evacuation space in an emergency, and prevention of raindrop dirt on the outer wall.

Curtains that decorate the exterior reminiscent of Thailand's rich seas and greens, Japanese-style moist and calm interior finishes/delicate details/impressive shades of ceiling louver, we have designed a design by usage of colors and materials and handling light that gives a sense of contemporary Japanese-Thai air everywhere.
