Refuge in Rosé by FV2 Architektur GmbH is an entry in the One-off homes, large and small Category of the 2020 WIN Awards

Retreat in Rosé is the result of a six month renovation of a historical 25 sq m apartment. Situated on the ground floor of a landmarked building in the center of Munich, it is accessed via the building’s courtyard.

Originally part of a retail shop on the street front, the space of 270 square foot was converted to a one bedroom apartment around the turn of the millennium. The result was an encapsulated and inconvenient room division. Thus the young designers of FV2 Architektur, commissioned in 2019 removed the load bearing walls, replaced them with columns and steel beams, to maximise the experience of generosity on a small scale.

The built-in furniture optimises storage space and practicability. A folding door optionally separates the dining and kitchen space from the sleeping area with the en-suite bathroom. A saloon-door in alignment with a detachable timber element functions as a visual barrier between bedroom and shower whilst natural light as well as natural air circulation are still guaranteed.

The single-sourced design of the furnished apartment enabled a consistent concept in materiality and form. Precious details, i.e. handles in leather, kitchen knobs in brass, large floor boards in oak, a fitted bath screen made of oak fins and tiles in special concrete optic transport high quality and preciousness.

A capacious storage was placed over the toilet to access from the kitchen. A built-in-closet creates space for further storage. Other measures included the repair of electrical installations and the modernisation of sanitary- and heating installations.
