The social interaction we encounter at work is something we all have a new appreciation for. Those experiences are the key focus at the offices of Toronto tech-investment management firm Volaris.

Seeking to change not only its location, but its corporate culture, the client left its former home - on the fifth floor of a building overlooking a busy highway - for a ground-floor spot that stretches into a wooded conservation area. The design team shaped the interior to enhance the way occupants interact with each other, using the views of nature to draw employees into a variety of spaces meant for communication and collaboration.

A plethora of glass meeting rooms, modular breakout zones, and a spacious, sun-filled café offer plenty of opportunity for formal and impromptu conversations. The space planning ensures the view can be enjoyed from every room and every workstation. A shared pathway - dubbed “the Boardwalk” - lines the windows, allowing the natural scenery to become a catalyst for conversation: Employees naturally gravitate towards the best views, and the Boardwalk is scattered with comfortable breakouts ready to host spontaneous interactions.

The positive effects of connecting with nature were essential in creating an environment where people feel at ease. Our studio took a holistic approach to infusing the project with natural materials, organic forms and subtle details that maximize the impact of the forest. Integrating a high degree of transparency throughout the space helps achieve this goal, and supports the sense of openness that Volaris promotes as a company value.
