Designed by world-renowned architect Eero Saarinen and opened in 1962, the TWA Flight Center was built for Trans World Airlines (TWA) by Howard Hughes, epitomizing the glamour and optimism of the Jet Age. Designated a New York City landmark in 1994, the treasured 216,000 sq ft terminal was restored by MCR and MORSE Development this past year. In May 2019, the monumental TWA Flight Center was reborn as the TWA Hotel.

Restoring the beloved building (a project led by Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners LLP), constructing two brand new hotel wings behind it (designed by Lubrano Ciavarra Architects) and building a 50,000 sq ft event center (by INC Architecture & Design) was a massive three-year-long endeavor. Stonehill Taylor was the exclusive interior designer for the hotel’s guest rooms, Sunken Lounge, and other public spaces. From the moment guests arrive, they find themselves immersed in the ethos of 1962s rich culture, architecture, sights, sounds, and ambiance.

Connected to the terminal through the original red-carpeted flight tubes, the guestrooms are designed to restore an excitement for travel, with Sixties-inspired elements including select furnishings, a martini bar, vintage rotary phone, and bathrooms with Hollywood-style vanities. In many of the rooms, beds are positioned to let guests enjoy the rhythm of the runway or the glory of the TWA Flight Center.

For the Connie - a cocktail bar converted from a vintage plane - Stonehill Taylor married a contemporary guest experience with design details that evoke the glamour of 1960s air travel and the industrial marvel of aviation.
