2020 WAN Awards entry: International School of Kuala Lumpur - HOK + Veritas Design Group

International School of Kuala Lumpur by HOK + Veritas Design Group is an entry in the is an entry in the Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

by Copy taken from 2020 entry 09 June 2020 2020

ISKL set the HOK design team a stimulating challenge - to create a new campus which would:
• Rival the very best international schools
• Stimulate learning and enrich the community
• Contain ‘schools within a school’, establishing each faculty (elementary, middle and high) as an individual entity, while fostering a shared sense of identity
• Embody environmental awareness and provide a regional and global sustainable exemplar

The 89,000 sq m space is organised into distinct elements. A curved, connecting north/south spine links teaching blocks forming a threshold between the outer, public realm and the inner, private world of the school. Blocks are aligned east/west, allowing high levels of daylight while protecting classrooms from intense sun. Public elements are placed around an open central plaza, the heart of the whole school, where ISKL comes together and reaches out to the wider community.

ISKL is the first school to achieve Malaysia’s Green Building Index Platinum. The design aims to use 60% less energy than schools in similar climates and draws on two key aspects of Malaysian architecture: screens and shelter. Screens modulate light, providing privacy and shade, while shelter offers protection from sun and rain. Chilled water cools floor-slabs at night, taking advantage of off-peak tariffs. ‘Coolth’ is retained in the thermal mass of the structure, reducing daytime cooling loads. Cool air escaping from classroom doors benefits common and transitional spaces, tempering the impact of moving directly from a cooled internal environment to the hot outdoors.

The school opened to pupils in 2019.
