2020 WAN Awards entry: The Amberly - Woods Bagot

The Amberly by Woods Bagot is an entry in the Residential Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

The mixed-use development resides at the intersection of some of New York's fastest-growing neighborhoods: Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights. The building reflects that specificity of location as the form and open spaces are designed to complement the scale of Downtown Brooklyn, the material sensibilities of DUMBO and the façade patterning of Brooklyn Heights' historic residential brownstones.

The pattern of glazing and terracotta-colored façade was designed from the inside out, mirroring the layout of the residential units within. Glazing panel widths reduce in size and frequency at areas of privacy, whereas living and dining areas are expanded to increase views and natural light through floor-to-ceiling vision glass. While a select few units have private terraces, the top two residential floors feature a luxurious view of Manhattan.

Rather than keeping those valuable top floors for penthouse uses, as is common practice, the design team created a dramatic overlook on the 33rd floor for all the residents to enjoy.

The glass façade of the office building is associated with the residential tower through metal fins at each vertical mullion that match the terracotta of the residential tower. These fins act as a visual screen between residential units and office interiors but also unite the massing of the two sections through their shared color. In addition, the fins add depth to the façade, whose appearance changes with movement - textured and solid from an oblique angle but transparent when aligned.
Size: 33,000 sq m
Completion: October 2019
