2020 WAN Awards entry: Crane Pavilion-Folded Flight - GBBN Architects, Inc

Crane Pavilion-Folded Flight by GBBN Architects, Inc is an entry in the Small Spaces Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

by Copy taken from 2020 entry 10 June 2020 2020

The Crane Pavilion is not only a habitat built for crane, but also a cultural memorial space between the burial site and natural reserve. Death and its rituals in Chinese culture have historically been marked by deep sorrow and fear, our design orients towards respect, emotion and as metaphoric way returning anthropological life origins, by alleviating fear and sadness in favor of graceful acceptance of death.

A continuous folded plate, reminiscent of the simple folding form of a paper origami crane integrates functions of cultural memorial area, an open platform, public parking, crane habitat, caretakers dorms and storage rooms in various levels.

The project is located in China's Hubei Province, which is the epicenter of the recent coronavirus pandemic. In order to memorialize the doctors, nurses, and volunteers who sacrificed their lives to fight this pandemic, a monument has been inscribed with their names and installed in this building.

We believe that this is the best way to remember their bravery and sacrifice. We hope that this building will be a witness to and help alleviate the grief of countless families and provide them with a sense of peace in their lives.
