2020 WAN Awards entry: Hongling Experimental Primary School - O-office Architects

Hongling Experimental Primary School by O-office Architects is an entry in the Education Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

The nearby 100 sq m site of Hongling Experimental Primary School, completed in September 2019, originally planned for a 24-class school, has increased to a capacity of 36 classes due to the huge pressure from the lack of school places. Therefore, design strategy on the vertical orientation becomes crucial to create a high-density urban school campus.

With the gross built area of 33,721 sq m and built ratio over 3, the school building, divided into two halves with different heights on the east and west, almost fully covers the land that can be constructed in the site. The general plan is an inter-linking mirrored E-shapes. The west half uses the obligatory spacing between classroom rows to create two “valley” courtyards which sink to the underground level and links to the landform gardens that organised the ground and underground functions.

A 200-meter circular runway sport field placed on the 3rd floor of the Eastern Half and linked to the middle level of the teaching building, offers convenience for students on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors to play on the sports area. Underneath of the stadium is a 300-seat auditorium, hanging above the semi-outdoor swimming pool in the landform park.

The drum-shape learning unit is the basic spatial cell for primary school students to learn and live together. Separated pairs of connectable learning units on the horizontal E-shaped green floor is a composite invention, for the local subtropical climate. Every 6 pairs of learning unit on an ascending floor shapes two semi-open courtyards.
