2020 WAN Awards entry: Trees-Parency - Archi-Solution Workshop Ltd

Trees-Parency by Archi-Solution Workshop Ltd is an entry in the Glass in Architecture Category of the 2020 WAN Awards

by Copy taken from 2020 entry 10 June 2020 2020

“Trees-Parency” is a workshop built for a combined space of design and fabrication. Expanded from a carrier-made structure with a central atrium, this house was originally for an industrial robot arm, which lately became a chief labor during this expansion.

For enlarging the capacity of the ground floor , a corridor by U-glass was attached on the south side. In order to properly accommodate a neighbor tree, whose trunk runs into the proposed space, a curve line was introduced to avoid its mass. Strategically, this curve was dashed into discrete segments regarding the module of U-glass, which also represent the corner seams of each section. Based on the ASW’s experience of digital fabrication, the in-situ robot arm was transformed into a flexible cutting system that was data-driven by codes from the Grasshopper in Rhinoceros.

Via these gradually deformed sections, consisted by hundreds of different angles of joints and lengths of panels, the up-rising glassy corridor was installed with a suppressed middle part to be friendly with the tree. The Glass panels were precisely cut with designed angles by robotic system.

This digital fabrication solution was proven to be efficient to save material and labors and brought up a new potential for this traditional material. As an addition, a 3D printed meeting table was recently designed and made with a U-glass countertop within this space. The expansion was entirely designed, fabricated and installed by ASW (Archi-Solution Workshop) itself. Floor area: 230 sq m; Glass area: 156 sq m; Built : June of 2019.
